High Tech Marine's Mirage Ski-Racer Restoration "Is it real or is it a Mirage?" Keith is the restorerof one of the few Mirage Ski-Racer Tunnell Hull original boats crafted and built in Texas by Brad Collins. Stopped Building Boats October 1997 Oob As Of 10/97. Brad Collins was the founder and former owner of "Mirage Boats of Texas." For those who don't know what a Mirage is, it is a light weight, kick a** tunnel boat that tore up Mod-Vp Racing for a while and now is highly competitive in the O/B drags. The hull mold was an original built from scratch by Mirage in 1988. Tom Drozd of Lake Dallass played a big part in building the plugs with Brad Collins. That is a "tunnel hull". Several builders offer them, but these are all custom outfits with very small (or no) dealer networks.
They operate as a compromise between a traditional V-hull and a catamaran. "Better" than a catamaran in that they have a decent hole shot, don't need as much power, and bank inward on turns. While faster than most V-hulls (not all) and not so tricky to handle as an extreme speed V-hull.
The Mirage has a Yamaha Pro-V 250 with a CMC hydraulic jack plate. The Yamaha Pro-V by Hydro Tech. The prop turns around 6000 RPM's and the top end speed is 99 mph tracked by GPS. If you see this boat on the lake or the Galveston Bay Area, or at Outrigger's on a Sunday, give us a shout and we may just take you for a spin! -
