The most common symptom of a gearcase problem is excessive rattling noise. An excessive rattling noise can be caused by several conditions. If either the seals or plugs are faulty, lubricant will be lost, and the resulting inadequate lubrication of the gears will create a rattling noise. Contaminants like metal particles or water in the lubricant will cause noise, and greatly accelerate gearcase component wear.
